about

"F_n (Mod 7) in (M2) Scales" is a song with a name which is inordinately difficult to type. By the way, to pronounce the name one simply says "F sub N mod 7 in M 2 Scales." What does it all mean? Well, it's a very literal description of the basic structure of this piece: the Fibonacci Sequence taken over modulo 7, then sonified on both whole tone scales, i.e. scales derived by continuously favoring the major 2nd interval...in a sense. ^_^

At any rate, there is always more than one way to sonify a mathematical sequence. This is a case in point in that it compares to one of my previous tunes of a similar name - "F_n (Mod 7) in Eb." Aside from sonifying the sequence in the whole tone scales instead of a major scale, there are of course many other differences. For example, the bass, mid, and treble voices are interchanged from one piece to the next. Most of the other differences come from modifications of the sounds used and automation of many parameters of the synths, effects, and mix.

Why would I bother to sonify the same sequence again? or even at all? A hint of the answer to the latter question can be found in my bio. As for the prior question...I was already planning on sonifying this sequence in at least these two ways. Both are relatively basic, fundamental scales which relate to the 7 element set of residues of modulo 7 rather well. On one hand, Eb has precisely 7 distinct pitches, disregarding octaves. On the other hand, the whole tone scales have exactly 7 pitches within one octave, inclusive. Beyond that, both scales are very familiar and dear to me...so hold a certain personal fascination.
